Fall 2011 Cabin Trip Joins Old and New Members Alike

As is a Chi Gamma tradition here in Tennessee, the chapter headed for the hills in their semesterly cabin trip. Both new and old members as well as pledges joined in the end-of-the-semester celebration, and formed closer bonds of brotherhood. Some of the highlights from the trip include:

Epic Movie Time with the Expendables
All Night Golden Tee Golf Tournament
Hot-Tub Time Machine with the Alumni
Ben Davis’ Annual Grape-a-Thon!

All told, the trip was a huge success, and Andrew Norris (our Risk Management chair) did a wonderful job ensuring that nothing at the cabin was broken. Plans have already been started for our next cabin trip with possible locations in North Carolina or a return to Gatlinburg.

Can Something Really Be Too Complex?

Jeff Godbold is preparing to climb to the top of the competition this year!

That’s what the brothers at Chi Gamma will find out in a few weeks when they host their first Rube Goldberg competition here at the University of Tennessee.

"Not so fast, Pardner!" - Adam Caswell

Two teams made of a mix of brothers and pledges have been formed, and are currently plotting the most complex way to water a plant. While a simple watering can may suffice for most horticulturists, Adam Caswell and Jeff Godbold (the two team leaders) have bigger ideas.

While they can’t

release the specifics yet, the pair is sure to impress as they both built their pledge class’ Rube Goldberg machine last year.

Brothers to Race in Annual Relay for Life

The brothers of Chi Gamma have been yearly competitors in the University of Tennessee’s Relay For Life event on campus. Groups from across the campus gather in Circle Park to hang out, listen to music, eat great food, and of course, walk.

12 hours of constantly rounding the track can get tiring, but not for the Chi Gamma brothers.

It’s a UT tradition, and it’s a Chi Gamma tradition too! – Karl L. Hughes (former Service Chairman)

Of course, the event isn’t just about walking. In the past, the brothers of Chi Gamma have cooked out and sold meals to passers-by, raising hundreds of dollars for cancer research.

This year, the event takes place on April 15th from 6pm to 6am. Come by and show the brothers your support while helping out a noble cause!

Founder’s Day Dinner

The Brothers met on Friday night, October 15th at Barley’s in the Old City to celebrate Founder’s Day. A total of 25 members attended, as well as 2 alumni (Ben Davis and Calain Schuman) and our Eta Pledge Class! Everyone had a great time–especially Karl, who won a pair of Brewer’s Jam tickets that Barley’s was giving away while we were there.

UT Graduate School of Engineering Information Session and Free Food!

On October 12th at 7pm in the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF) Auditorium, a representative from the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Engineering will be speaking about some of the programs available, and the process of admission into the graduate school. He will be able to answer questions, and offer his insight and advice for choosing the right program and completing the necessary steps to succeed at the graduate level. Free food will be provided, and all undergraduate students at UT who are considering graduate school in engineering are encouraged to attend.

Theta Tau Teams Up With the National Society of Black Engineers to Send Students Off Into the Wild Blue Yonder

On October 20th at 7pm the United States Air Force will be sending a representative to campus to let engineers at UT know about some of the exciting opportunities that the Air Force can provide to students. The Air Force has a broad range of jobs available to engineers, and can help pay for school as well as provide invaluable leadership experience and technical training to students. This event is open to all students, but will be more specifically geared towards engineering majors, and will be held in HSS 71.

Autodesk Inventor and Autocad Interactive Tutorial

On Wednesday, September 8th, the Professional Development Committee will be hosting an Autodesk Inventor and Autocad Tutorial open to the whole college of engineering at UT. Our very own Stephen Oi and Alex Sheinfeld will be leading the interactive tutorial, and students will be able to practice along with the instructors and ask questions. It starts at 7pm in Perkins 208. Computer space is limited so come early or bring your own laptop with the program(s) previously installed to ensure a spot.
