Brothers at Yearly Camping Trip

A group of brothers sit outside a camper at our semesterly camping trip on a brother's farm.

We know everyone has questions of some sort so below is a few of the common ones we hear. If you have any other questions we will gladly accept them at rush@tennesseethetatau.org any time of the year. Rush may only happen twice a year but recruitment is a year long event for us.

What Are We?

We are a co-ed professional engineering fraternity. We mix the brotherhood and philanthropy of a social fraternity with the professional contacts, developmental tools, and engineering atmosphere of a honor society. We find this to be the best of both worlds as it gets you closely entwined with not only your career but your peers/brothers.

When Were You Founded?

We became a colony in 2007 but received chapter-hood in January of 2009. Our chapter’s 9 founders have all graduated but that doesn’t mean they don’t come around often to make sure we are all doing well.

Oh so you are new…

New, yes. Inactive, no.

Through connections with our founders we have been closely involved with the university for numerous events. We have helped setup and assist the recruiters at almost every engineering fair since we became a colony as well as assisted in hosting numerous events with Career Services.

At our first National Convention as a chapter we received awards for Best Service, Best Photograph, Chapter Growth, and scoring outstandingly on our yearly chapter report.

We may be new but we definitely make a name for ourself.

Who Is Allowed to Pledge?

We are co-ed so both guys and gals are allowed to pledge to be members of Theta Tau. However, you must be 18 years of age, be enrolled or have passed EF 151 or equivalent (don’t want to forget you computer science and honors students!), have a 2.5 GPA or higher (same as the school of engineering), and have a firm intention of pursuing a degree in engineering or computer science.

What Do We Do?

We have a large variety of activities we host. We have brotherhood, service, and professional development events.

Our largest brotherhood event is one of two retreats we take a semester. One is typically more outdoors-y and the other is a cabin trip. We can’t have people freezing their butts off during the winter now can we. We get together regularly to go out on the town and even go to things such as corn-mazes, bowling, and feasts.

As for service we give back in the form of labor to many community organizations as well as donate various supplies. Recently we have been working with Beardsley Farms to build them a drip irrigation system saving them a lot of time and manpower.

In professional development we have helped recruiters setup and interact with students, publicly teach our peers outside of Theta Tau various skills they will need to know in the work force through seminars, as well as private seminars with outside speakers.

How Large is Your Chapter

As of Spring 2011 we are 40 strong. We have a rapidly growing alumni base which gives us connections all over the states.

What Is Brotherhood?

Brotherhood means that each brother feels comfortable calling other members his brother. They will help you to the best of their ability in whatever way you may need it. This is important for everything from finding something to do one weekend to finding a last minute co-op or internship for the coming term.

New Member, Rebecca Agle proves that women can be just as handy as men when fixing a car. Why wouldn't we let them into our Chapter?

Do you allow girls?

Yes, we are co-ed so both girls and guys are welcome!

Why Should I Join?

We offer the benefits of professionalism and networking of a professional honor society with all of the friendship and brotherhood of a social Greek organization. We have members of all disciplines who have or have had a similar engineering curriculum. You will be instantly included in a large network of 40 active students and 20 alumni of whom most have held co-op or internships in the engineering profession not to forget the 63 other chapters and colonies who would do same for a brother of Theta Tau.

What about Leadership?

If you are interested in pursuing leadership roles we are a great organization to join. We all know how much employers love seeing leadership on resumes and we have a large number of positions that involve interactions within the college atmosphere as well as the surrounding community. If you are motivated individual then there is a spot for you.

I need to beef up my resume, what can you do to help?

Though we do not support joining Theta Tau purely for a resume padder we do offer many opportunities that look great on resumes. Leadership roles are presented throughout the semester for everything from overlooking an entire aspect of our organization to planning a single event. We have opportunities for levels of time commitment. We also provide you with the means to grow yourself both professionally but also give back to your community. These things are great during interviews as they give you topics for discussion as well as show that you were active not only as a student but in your community both on campus and in the neighborhood.
